Episode 319: Can't Stop, Won't Stop, Gamestop

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

As per usual we hit a lull following SDCC with just a few trailers with Zombie Land 2, Won't You Be My Neighbor, and the Kingsman.  But we do talk about what feels like the impending demise of Gamestop, our streaming review of The Hate U Give and wrap it all up with by answering our podquestion of "which superhero would you like to see made into a video game?"

This week's streaming review was The Hate U Give on HBOgo. We knew going into this that it was going to be a heavy movie, and we were absolutely right.  This movie tackles some extremely relevant and recent topics that have been in the social zeitgeist and it does it very well.  The movie is long and, at times, exhausting but it is worth the price of admission thanks to the stellar acting of the cast.  Especially Amandla Stenberg's performance is something to witness.  Seeing her character grow and be able to show the full range of emotions that come with the often painful change.  We both highly recommend giving this movie your time and attention.

Our next week's streaming review is on Amazon Prime, we're going to watch Serenity.

Episode 318: Lion King Remastered

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

And what a hell of a week it was.  We have a hole mess of news including all of the trailers, announcements and cool tidbits from SDCC, we also do some deep dives into the stories involving the fire at Kyoto Animation, discuss our theatrical review of Lion King, talk about Halloween (2018) and answer last week's podquestion of "Which brand are you most loyal to."  It's a whirlwind of an episode, or perhaps a roller coaster is a more appropriate metaphor?  Either way, strap in and enjoy the ride.

This week's streaming review was Halloween (2018).  As someone who never watched any of the previous movies this one serves as a decent enough jumping on point.  With plenty of characters and moments in the story to bring you up to speed (including some poor podcasters).  Bat pointed out that there were also quite a few little easter eggs here and there for long time fans.  The movie overall isn't super original and to Bat's point it doesn't really do all too much new.  But as my first foray with Michael Myers I have to say it wasn't too bad.  He's still not in my top tier of horror villains but the creative use of angles and darkness does give him a nice flare.  We both came out of this one 50/50 with us only really recommending the movie to fans, otherwise you can skip it and save yourself some time.

HBOgo is at it again, this time on a more somber note with
The Hate U Give.

Episode 317: A More English Robin Hood

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

The trickle of news continues but fret not!  We have a new Marvel Movie to review with Spider Man: Far From Home hitting the theaters.  As always we bring you our spoiler free and spoiler filled reviews of this web slinging feature. We also talk about the new Ariel casting, review our streaming movie A Star Is Born and answer last week's podquestion of "what city would you want to destroy as Godzilla?"

This week's streaming review was the 2018 Robin Hood. This was a movie that I actually wanted to see in the theaters but missed.  It seemed like it blended the Knights Tale modern/classical feel with action from Kingsman.  Happy to report we were not disappointed in the least.  Sure, Robin Hood isn't a great movie, but it never attempts to be.  It simply tires to have fun and add a new twist on a classic tale, which it does.  The arrow combat is silly but enjoyable and, most importantly, consistent.  We talked a bit about how some movies make rules but don't stick with them.  Robin Hood makes the rules of it's world and steals at least part of our hearts.  We both gave this one a thumbs up and would recommend you give it a shot.

Who knew that HBOgo would have a pretty large treasure trove this month but we're diving into it again, this time to watch Halloween (2018).  I've never actually seen this one so it should be fun to jump by myself as we watch the wacky hi-jinks of Michael Myers.

Episode 316: But Did You Get The Nachos

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

The trickle of news continues but fret not!  We have a new Marvel Movie to review with Spider Man: Far From Home hitting the theaters.  As always we bring you our spoiler free and spoiler filled reviews of this web slinging feature. We also talk about the new Ariel casting, review our streaming movie A Star Is Born and answer last week's podquestion of "what city would you want to destroy as Godzilla?"

This week's streaming review was A Star Is Born. We both have heard so much about this movie and were genuinely curious to see what all of the buzz was about.  Sadly, neither of us were really blown away by the movie.  While there are definite parts of the movie we enjoyed, over all it just wasn't what we were hoping for.  Something that really held the movie back for both of us was the never ending downward spiral of a relationship between Cooper and Gaga. With numerous points in the movie the characters seemed to realize they were bad for each other but then ignored the signs and went right back to each other.  While that might have been the point, it was exhausting as an audience member.  We didn't come out of the movie hating it, but we also didn't come out loving it... we just felt "meh" about it all.  It's hard for either of us to recommend this movie to anyone but we also can't really tell you to skip it either.  Sorry folks, we wish we could give you more.

Next week we will we continue our HBOgo kick with Robin Hood.

Episode 315: E3 Hang Overs and Star Wars Revelations

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

As it is with most post E3 shows, it's a bit of a slow news day.  But that's okay because you're talking to of the best bullshitters... well maybe not the best but we hold our own.  This week we discuss the announcement of a Final Fantasy 14 TV show, a Star Wars revelation for me and we review this week's streaming review of BlackkKlansman. To wrap it up we answer our podquestion of, "Which game would you want to get the FF8 treatment?"

This week's streaming review was Spike Lee's BlackkKlansman on HBOgo. Wow, right from the start this movie sets it's tone and it doesn't ease up from there.  This movie was honestly pretty damn good.  From the acting, the cinematography, to the concept, it's a pretty intense and hard hitting tail. Even to the end, this movie drives home the point that "Racism is still prevalent" and and that we can't ignore it. We both highly recommend this movie, go see it now.

Next week we will we continue our HBOgo kick with A Star Is Born.
