Episode 307: Avengers Endgame

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

It has happened.  Endgame is here and we have seen it and we're eager to get down to talking about every possible piece of this end of a Saga.  But fret not, we will do our normal spoiler free review along with our streaming review of Logan Lucky, Bat's impressions of Days Gone and answer our podquestion of "Which GoT house would you be a part of?"  After all that is covered be prepared for ALL the spoilers after we close the show, you have been warned.

This week we took a chance on Logan Lucky on Amazon Prime. This movie is a hell of a strange heist movie and feels like something that would have been directed by the Cohen Brothers.  While Bat really enjoyed the quick and charm of the movie I just couldn't stay interested.  Even the acting was solid the plot and humor just lost me.  While nothing special, Bat would still recommend giving it a watch while I say give it a pass.

Next week we're watching the classic Logan's Run on Netflix.  Funny enough, neither of us had seen this one before so we figured it's time to give it a shot.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

Episode 306: Let the Shit Show Begin

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

With less than a week left to go until End Game hits and destroys the theaters, we decided to stay home (sorry again, Hellboy). Also with my dear co-host Bat dreadfully lacking in sleep and the world lacking in news, we have a shorter show in store for you. We do dive in and review our streaming movie, Polar, as well as discuss PS5 rumors and answer this week's podquestion of, "Who will sit on the Iron Throne?"

This week we once again subjected ourselves to a Netflix Original. This time it was the Mads Mikkelsen-led Polar. Now I said last week that I felt a little bad making Bat watch this with me, but luckily and most surprisingly, we were both really happy with the film. You read that right: We both liked a Netflix Original movie (queue End of the World music). But really folks, this might be one of the few times they actually knock it out of the park. While the movie has a certain visual flare, thanks to its comic book origins, what really sets this movie apart is its star. Mikkelsen really brings to life this lethargic near-retirement badass of an assassin. One of our biggest complaints with most originals is the lack of pacing. Thankfully, this movie doesn't fall victim to that same pitfall. If you're looking for a vengeance flick in the vein of Punisher/Kill Bill with the visuals of Smoking Aces, make sure to give Polar an honest-to-goodness shot.

We're taking a little break from gungy vengeance flicks and watch something we both have kept passing by. This week's streaming review is Logan Lucky on Amazon Prime.

Episode 305: The Second First Purge

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

This week we take a little bit of a break from theatrical movies (sorry Hellboy) and instead we get into some serious news provided by the House of Mouse. No, but seriously we have a whole shit-ton of news this week starting with the release of the disc-less Xbox, being able to change your PSN names (finally), the announcement of Disney +, first trailer and title of Star Wars Episode 9, trailer for the Mandalorian, Lion King trailer, and a slew of newly announced Marvel TV shows. We also bring you our streaming review of "The First Purge" and answer this week's podquestion of, "Who is your favorite superhero family?"

This week we watched The First Purge on HBOgo. As we have joked many times on the podcast before, we have had a history of not seeing these movies in the theater. While not on purpose, it always seems to work out this way. But, these movies have also been fairly enjoyable at-home experiences. This movie gives you a good insight of what the world was before the Purge was a regular occurrence. While it overly has a very predicable story, especially if you've seen the other films, this one had some good character arcs and fun moments. We especially enjoyed watching Big D become one of the central heroes. If you've seen the third Purge movie, then all of the plot twists will be a bit old-hat. If you wanted to see a little bit more of this crazy, fucked-up world, we both believe you would enjoy this movie. It's probably our third favorite with the original Purge being the last.

Next up is going to be the Netflix original, Polar. Bat is definitely not excited for this one, due to our vast experience with Netflix originals, but I'm hoping for something fun.

Episode 304: Kaza....I Mean Shazam!

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

This week we dip our toes into the DC pool this time as we went out to the theaters to watch Shazam! Don't worry - We'll bring you our spoiler-free and spoiler-full reviews of DC's latest opus. This week we also talk a little nerd news with our favorite game finally giving a release date this year - "Borderlands 3," we talk about the new Joker trailer, as well as review our streaming movie, "Fyre" and answer this week's podcast question of, "Are you going to be buying a 4K TV?"

This week we watched my suggestion of the Netflix original documentary Fyre. This movie truly depicts the birth of a clusterfuck. It was as exhausting as it was interesting to watch how all the planning (didn't) come together. They say that it takes village to raise a child, but this situation demonstrates that it only takes one person to destroy one. This documentary treats us to an interesting perspective of a very charismatic leader who can make anybody believe the impossible is possible. But when the veil is lifted, we're able to see the mess that's left in his wake. Neither of us really paid a lot of attention to this when it was going on. What we do remember was a bunch of stranded rich people on an island. The reality behind it all was much more fascinating, terrifying, and a reality-check. This only happened a couple of years ago, yet it seems like this is something that should've happened decades ago. In a world where Influencers rule much of our perceptions and opinions, this movie serves as a Come-To-Jesus moment to truly check yourself before you let someone else wreck yourself.

We both really enjoyed this movie and would recommend anybody who's curious about it give it a watch.

Next week we are going to continue the trend of never seeing Purge movies in the theater (not on purpose) by watching The First Purge on HBOgo.
