Episode 303: Colorful Destruction

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! This week we skip on the theatrical movie goodness and instead bring you our spoiler free review of Annihilation.  We also bring you some news with the Sony State of Play, Hammil as Chucky, Borderlands 3.  We also have some free shit, good shit before we wrap up with answering our podquestion of which handheld weapon would you wield.

This week we watched Bat's suggestion of Annihilation. We frequently have heard this movie mentioned among one of our all time favorites, Arrival, so you know we had to give this one a try.  With some big names and some gorgeous visuals, Annihilation treats us to some very high and heavy Sci-Fi that makes you question everything.  The over all premise of the movie is familiar, alien sort of thing invades earth and seemingly trys to take over earth.  But the execution is where this movie helps set itself apart from many of it's ilk.  The capable crew slowly begins to unhinge as they dive deeper into the Shimmer and start to find more oddities.  Some of the standouts were the slithering insides (hork...), the death screams bear and the human like plants.  Visuals aside, the acting and the sound design are also striking.  While the pace is slow and the movie at times suffers from it we both agree that it is worth your time.

Next week we're going to watch the Netflix original documentary Fyre.  This is about a music festival on an island where the attendees showed up but the event never actually happened.  I've heard some interesting stuff about this one so why not give it a watch with us.

Episode 302: Quintuplet Frontier

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! This week we bring you half of a theatrical review with Bats spoiler-free review of Us. Along with that we also bring you a smattering of GDC news including Stadia, Playstation's State of Play, and some other goodies.

We also review our streaming fan's suggestion of Triple Fronteir and answer last week's pod-question of "Which Star Wars Hero you would want to see brought into Battlefront 2?"

This week we watched the fan's suggestion of Triple Frontier. Our friend of the Show, TK, suggested this one due to its similarities to Ghost Recon Wildlands. The movie starts off really strong with plenty of action scenes and strong character development. It really gets you into the mode of a heist movie and watching the planning and execution is half of the fun. Unfortunately, like many of the Netflix originals, this move suffers from a lack of editing. While we liked how the first third of the movie started, once the heist portion of the movie was completed it started to drag its feet. With all the star power this movie has, the actors had little to nothing to do for the last two thirds of the movie. Bat gives this a thumbs up while I recommend you give this one a pass. This movie has a lot going for it but fails to live up to most of its potential.

Next week we're going to watch Bat's suggestion of Annihilation. This has been one that both of us have been wanting to see for some time and we're really looking forward to it. Please feel free to watch along with us on Amazon Prime.

Episode 301: Over My Head

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! We're taking it easy this week with Captain Marvel still chugging along in the theaters we're biding our time till our next theatrical adventure.  For now we have a little slower nerd news week with no EA at E3 (really who's going to be left?) James Gunn back for Guardians 3, New Aladdin and Avengers End Game trailers. We wrap it all up with our Streaming review of Under The Skin and answering last week's Podquestion of who is your favorite galactic comic character.

This week we watched the my suggestion of Under the Skin on Netflix. We both have heard of this movie and were curious to see ScarJo as an sexy Alien on the Prowl.  But what we got was another allegorical mish mash and some artsy nonsensical scenes.  Maybe we're just not smart enough for the movie (possible) but it really just fly completely over our heads.  I only got a slightly better understanding of what was going on after reading a couple of guides to the movie.  Yup, this movie required me to have a guide to better understand it.  Regardless of what implications it was trying to make (Hunter Turned Prey, Our fascination with appearances or trying to give perspective on the human condition) it all just fell flat and left us confused.  Give this one a pass, you really aren't missing much.

Next week we're going to take a break from Netflix to ...watch another Netflix movie.  This time it's a suggestion from our friend TK and he wants us to watch the Netflix original, Triple Frontier.

Episode 300: Captain of Marvel

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! It looks like we're taking a few notes from Captain Marvel's time shenanigans and we're futzing with our number scheme.  It's 299, or is it 300? Try not to think too hard on it and instead listen in on as we dive into Marvel's latest entry with Captain Marvel. We will be bringing you our spoiler free and spoiler filled impressions. Among the few nerd news topics of Anthem woes, Alex Trebek, Blizzard Layoffs, Idris Elba as Deadshot, Disney's Galaxy's Edge open dates and some free shit good shit. We wrap this week's episode by reviewing this week's streaming review, Sorry to Bother You and answering last week's Podquestion of what is your next TV series you want to start.

This week we watched the Bat's suggestion of Sorry to Bother You on Hulu.  Wow... this movie is one hell of a strange experience that left both Bat and I pretty speechless.  And not in the good way.  The movie takes some extremely odd turns around midway and becomes a heavy and convoluted commentary about social troubles.  I'm going to be honest, there is so much going on and I don't really get most of it.  I feel like the movie about this movie or maybe listening in on directors commentary would have been more interesting than the movie itself.  There are some great actors in here, just not great roles.  We both suggest giving this one a pass.

Next up is the Scarlett Johansson movie
Under the Skin on Netflix.

Episode 299: But Really it's 300

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! Holy shit, can you believe we've been doing this for over 6 years and now 300 episodes?  Yup, neither can we.  Mind you this is technically our 299th episode and we're celebrating early with having another Geek's Roundtable with our friends Sarah, Justin and Matt.  As we've done in our past specials we had each person bring in 2 topics and keep them secret and keep them safe.  That way we get the basic and raw answers as we're hearing the topics/questions for the first time.

Do we meander and digress at every possible opportunity?  absolutely! So sit back and listen in for some strange, sometimes introspective and other times completely ridiculous conversations as we toast to leveling up!
