Episode 298: How to Train Your Dragon The Lost Hidden World

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! It seems that the winter storm that hit most of the United States caused a massive news slowdown because we're back to having just a few news stories.  But don't fret, we are hitting 2-2 as we hit the theaters again this week to watch How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.  We will be bringing you our spoiler free and spoiler filled impressions. Among the few nerd news topics of Reggie retiring from Nintendo and more Xbox/Nintendo Speculation we also review this week's streaming review, Won't You Be My Neighbor.  Lastly we wrap up this week's episode by answering last week's Podquestion of what song would you choose to replace for FF8's Eyes on Me.

This week we watched the Heterolifemate's suggestion of  Won't You Be My Neighbor on HBOgo. While both of us were expecting to cry in this one we were surprised by our dry eyes throughout the movie... well up until the ending.  This documentary shed more light on a person that many of us watched and even showed how the world reacted to him during his tenure on television.  Seeing Fred Rogers as a real person with flaws and humor just made his dedication to enriching childhood development all the more impressive.  It's extremely surprising to see the push back from society when a person tells children and people that they are special. The two moments that left both of us tearing up were from his commencement speech for Dartmouth in 2002.  One was how he talks about taking a minute to recognize those who have impacted your life and the other was when he talks about the power of Love (see below).   Here's a link to the speech if you want to listen.

And what that ultimately means, of course, is that you don't ever have to do anything sensational for people to love you. When I say it’s you I like, I’m talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see, or hear, or touch. That deep part of you, that allows you to stand for those things, without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate. Peace that rises triumphant over war. And justice that proves more powerful than greed.
-Fred Rogers, 2002

Needless to say, we both recommend this movie.  It's a short watch at an hour and a half and you will learn more about this man who would be your neighbor.

This documentary about one of our childhood heroes, Mr. Rogers, is sure to make us cry.  So won't you watch this one with us?

Next week we're going to watch another one of those movies we missed in the theaters, Sorry to Bother You on Hulu.  Both Bat and I were instantly intrigued when we saw this trailer and are looking forward to reviewing it.

Episode 297:A Badass Angel Alita

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!  And what a week it was!  We have so much to talk about this week. We got to see the live action adaptation of Battle Angel Alita in some sweet, sweet Dolby Theater and bring you our spoiler free and spoiler filled impressions. But we don't stop there as we do our Disneyland recap, and talk about all of the trailer drops and nerd news including: Nintendo Direct, Link's Awakening remaster, Tetris 99, Activision Blizzard layoffs, Aladdin/Tolkien and Frozen 2 trailers.  And we wrap up by answering last week's Podquestion which game in your backlog do you want to beat this year.

Because we were out for most of the week we don't have a streaming movie to review this week but we do have an awesome fan suggestion from the Heterolifemate.  He wants us to watch Won't You Be My Neighbor on HBOgo.  This documentary about one of our childhood heroes, Mr. Rogers, is sure to make us cry.  So won't you watch this one with us?

Episode 296: I O U a better movie

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!  This week we review our streaming movie from two weeks ago, IO, along with discussing some of the nerd news with Xbox on Switch, PlayStation 5 rumors before wrapping it all up by answering last week's Podquestion of who is your favorite TV Dad..

Our streaming review for this week was IO on Netflix.  It's kind of sad that when we mention that we're watching a Netflix Original Movie that we expect something that is not fully baked and won't really satisfy.  What's worse is that we constantly get proven right each and every time.  Sadly IO does not stray too far from our expectations.  With the various plots involving the supposed evolution of the human race, the visitor (Mackey) looking for her father, and the pen-pal love letters the audience just gets lost. These kinds of miss step like movies make me think that Netflix should be focusing on Short Films rather than full on Movies.
But with IO, the concept really felt like it had promise but the execution left something to be desired.  Feel free to skip this one.

Because we are going to be out for most of the week, YAY Disneyland, we won't have a streaming movie for this week.  But you can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.
