Episode 256: Black Panther

Welcome back to our on time  week in geek. It's kind of sad I have to say that, but I have had a bad track record of not getting these episodes out on time.  Thank you to our listeners for checking in, we really do appreciate you so much for putting up with and supporting our shenanigans weekly. This week we actually got out to the theaters to see Black Panther so listen along for our spoiler free and spoiler filled review of the first Marvel movie of the year. We also review this week's fan suggested streaming review of The Adventures of TinTin and an answer this week's podquestion of what was the last CD you purchased.

Also as a heads up, Because Bat will be out of the state this week (Disneyland!) we will not be posting our regularly scheduled show next week.  But please look forward to the following Monday for your regular SzG goodness.

This week's streaming review of  suggestion of The Adventures of TinTin was brought to us by our friend Mando.  While neither of us were really engaged by this movie we did acknowledge that it was a rather beautiful production.  But because we never really got attached to the character we just couldn't get into the movie.  With all of the non stop action and wacky set pieces we just had a sense of "been there, done that" and spent a large portion of the movie doing other things and getting distracted.  We didn't hate the movie but we also really can't say we liked it.  Bat gave it a cautious thumbs up and I gave it a thumbs down. Skip it or see it, the choice is yours.

This week we're going to get dark, how dark you ask?  Is it a numerical value maybe?  Well, you would indeed be correct.  We are getting exactly 50 Shades Darker.  Come and join the joyous romp of this hilarious romantic comedy on HBOgo.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

Episode 225: The Long Forgotten Delay

Welcome back to our...suuuuuuper delayed week in geek. This week we get down with some nerd news (including all of the Super Bowl movie teasers), review this week's impromptu streaming suggestion of Cloverfield Paradox and answer last week's question of ideal timeline from first tease of info for a video game to the actual release.

This week's streaming review was brought to us as a surprise by Netflix, Cloverfield Paradox.  We knew this movie was coming out but having it drop right after the Super Bowl was a hell of a Hail Mary... see I can sometimes make decent sports references.  Coming to accept that J.J.'s Cloverfield movies are a new sort of Twilight Zone is really helpful when coming into this movie.  Knowing that there are similarities between the 3 (so far) films can be confusing to anyone.  But the constants are: there are monsters, humans have to deal with them in some way or form.  We both love this concept and think it makes for some amazing movie going, plus the inclusion of Cloverfield  gets the muggles in seats when they might otherwise opt out. The movie is beautiful and the acting is pretty damn good, along with a meaningful diverse cast.  I think we both came to an agreement that while this movie is not perfect (though really, what movie is?) it was a damn enjoyable romp back into the Cloverfield Universe(s) and had tons of nods to Event Horizon.  We both recommend giving this one a watch and agree that it would have been just as good in a theater as it was at home.  Take some popcorn and strap in.

Okay, so now were going back for Mando's suggestion of The Adventures of TinTin which you can watch this one on Netflix.

Episode 224: What Happened To TGIF

Welcome back to our week in geek. This week we get down with some nerd news, dish out some free shit good shit for PS+ games, review this week's streaming suggestion of What Happened to Monday and answer last week's question of what real life animal would you choose to be your mount?

This week's streaming review was brought to us by TK, his suggestion was What Happened to Monday.  Like many other Netflix original movies we can start off with saying that this movie needs some tightening up and it is very reminiscent of the likes of Gattacaand Children of Men.  Mind you it's not nearly the level of some of the bad Netflix original movies we've seen.  We both enjoyed the movie, it had some good performances from Noomi Rapace and the over all story and concept was interesting. Where we wished to see more development was that of the different sisters individual personalities.  With each sister having their very own day of the week, it would have been nice to see how diverse their desires and activities were.  This stems from our biggest of wants, more investment in the different sisters.  Once they started to kill them off it got harder and harder to tell which one was dying and which one you were rooting for.  Give this one a shot, even if only to watch Rapace's performance, but don't be in any kind of rush.

So we were originally going to watch Mando's suggestion of The Adventures of TinTin but then Netflix dropped
Cloverfield Paradox right after the Super Bowl and we had to course correct to not miss a moment of the Cloverfield awesomeness...hopefully.  You can watch this one on Netflix.
