Episode 223: and the Golden Globe Goes to...

Welcome back to our week in geek. there's a little bit of a news this week with talk of the new Captain Marvel Costume, God of War release date and some (lackluster) Games with Gold. We review this week's streaming suggestion of Dallas Buyers Club and answer last week's question of which famous person, living or dead, would you have a beer with.

This week's streaming review was Bat's suggestion of Dallas Buyers Club. I guess you can say that both of us went in with rather high expectations, with the cast and the Golden Globe buzz.  But what we got was a good but not great movie.  The performances were good, but not life changing.  The story was interesting but not as engaging as we were expecting.  While this was a good movie and we would recommend giving it a watch we were a little miffed about the performances that McConaughey and Leto put forth.

This next week we're watching a fan suggestion of What Happened to Monday
on Netflix, brought to us by TK.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

Episode 222: Discovering Nothing

Welcome back to our week in geek. We're continuing the streak of slow news week and I almost  forgot to watch this streaming review but Bat made sure that I finished the travesty that is Discovering Bigfoot.  We also talk some nerd news, discuss some new trailers along with rumors of a new fable and we answer last week's question of who would play you in your made for TV movie.

This week's streaming review was from our friend Mando.  For some reason he decided to torture us with the "documentary" of Discovering Bigfoot on Netflix.  Wow... it's almost hard to know where to begin.  I guess we should ask someone if this is a mockumentary or is it an honest attempt at a documentary?  As a mockumentary it's wayyyy too long (running almost 2 hours) and the laughs are non present.  Really I guess you could say it's just unremarkable.  Now as a documentary this is absolutely ridiculous and plan stupid.  Well... if Bat and I had watched this blitzed it might have been fun.  But on it's own it was long, boring, ridiculous and lacked any real revelations that usually come with these sort of movies.  If you are a fan of Bigfoot you would be better spent looking up TV episodes of Sightings from the 90's.  We both say give this one a pass... also this is proof that we will watch it if you recommend it.  So, remember... "with great power, comes great responsibility."

Okay with that terrible movie out of our way let's move on to a real movie.  Bat's suggestion this week is Dallas Buyers Club on Netflix.  I think we're both prepared to cry and feel emotions on this one.

Episode 221: Cold Bat and Drunken Hammer

Welcome back to our brief week in geek. We're continuing the streak of slow news week and I forgot to watch the streaming review so instead we have a very cold bat talking with a very drunk hammer about this week's streaming review of Brawl in Cell Block 99 and answer this week's questions of what is the most disgusting thing you've seen on South Park.

This week's streaming review was the Vince Vaughn fueled Brawl in Cell Block 99 on Amazon Prime.  Sadly I missed out on this movie and left all the fun to Bat.  What he describes is yet another example of a streaming exception to our movie standards.  As a streaming movie it's okay but as a theatrical release this one just would have left us unfulfilled.  Even with Bat's love of Vaughn it just wasn't enough to recommend this movie to others.

This week's streaming review comes from our friend Mando and he wants us to get into some cryptozoology fun with Discovering Bigfoot on Netflix.

Episode 220: Bright Ideas for the Future

Welcome back to our week in geek. While it's our second podcast into the new year and we've already hit a slow news week.  So while we babble on about non nerdy things we also discuss this week's streaming review of Bright and answer this week's podquestion of  what is your geeky New Year's resolution.

This week's streaming review was the Netflix original Bright. This movie has spawned a very large range of reviews from like to absolute hate.  While we definitely see the issues that many others have with the missing lore we both gave the movie a like.  I had better time with the movie than Bat but will say that the movie could really use a nice opening scrawl or scattered scenes to explain the world a little more.  The one thing we both completely agree on is how much we loved the chemistry between the two cops.  Soon enough you forgot that it was a Human and an Orc and thought of them just as an odd couple.  Our big hope is that the sequel that is now confirmed builds upon the world that we want to know more about.  Give this odd movie a try.

This week's streaming review comes from Bat and is fueled by his love for Vince Vaugh.  We're watching Brawl in Cell Block 99 on Amazon Prime.

Episode 219: 2018 Year In Review

Welcome back to our first week in geek for the New Year!  As is tradition this week's episode will focus on looking back on what we watched, what we liked, what we didn't like and what surprised us the most.  We watched a lot of streaming movies but what surprised us both is how many theatrical releases we go out to see.  It was a busy year and we're going to break it all down.  We also discuss our streaming review of The Big Sick, Free Shit Good Shit and answer our podquestion of what Comic Cons should be named going forward.

This week's streaming review was The Big Sick.  As I stated when I recommended this one it was mainly due to my love of the Geeky Husband/Wife podcast that Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon used tot do along with Nerdist.  This movie is based around how the found and fell in love with each other in real life with a few embellishments here and there.  While it was over all rather light on the comedy it was a very endearing movie and we both enjoyed how it portrayed a real relationship with it's ups and downs.  Probably some of our favorite moments were those with the parents of Gordon, played by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano.  While Bat said he enjoyed it I came out of the movie very happy and a little teary eyed.  We both recommend giving this a whirl.

This week's streaming review comes from our dear friend TK, the Netflix original Bright
We were both really curious about this one as it was pretty well publicized and is a higher profile Netflix original.  The movie takes place in modern setting but with Orc, Elves and magic.  You can watch it with us on Netflix.
