Episode 202: Atomic Blondie

Hello and welcome to back to our regularly scheduled week in geek.  It's only been a little over 2 weeks and damn has a lot happened since then.  We had all of D23, SDCC, My Denver Trip and a whole shit ton of movies.  Since we've both been hitting the theaters hard we're going to give a spoiler free review of Dunkirk and War for the Planet of the Apes before we get into the meat and potatoes and give our spoiler free and spoiler filled review of Atomic Blonde.  We dissect the various news pieces from SDCC, review our streaming review of Creed, bring some free shit good shit and answer last weeks podquestion of "who is your favorite Spiderman villain."

This last streaming review was a bit of a surprise.  While the trailers and concept alone really grabbed my attention, I was worried that my lack of Rocky knowledge was going leave me high and dry.  Luckily Creed is the perfect jumping on point for newcomers and old fans.  There is plenty of nostalgia and references to keep your attention but thanks to Michael B Jordan Adonis really stands on his own.  Both of us really enjoyed the fights and training montages and were really happy with the revisit to a classic franchise and would recommend this movie to you all.

Keeping the with the war movies (thank you Dunkirk) we're choosing to watch Hacksaw Ridge for this week's streaming review on HBOgo.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

Why suicide is the answer

This is a post, separate of the B&H podcast. The views here and mine (Bat) and mine alone.

I sit here, in one of my favorite places in Phoenix, tears streaming down my face, trying to put my thoughts into words. I'm supposed to meet Hammer to watch Dunkirk for the podcast, but I won't make that show. He doesn't know yet, and will find out when I don't show up. He'll forgive me in time. He's a much better man than I, and a better friend than deserve.

I wanted to write the post, as it's something extremely personal to me. My daily fight with depression. I'm not referring to the internet "I haz a sad" depression,  I mean clinical depression.

It's something I've had to battle my entire life. I of course have good days and bad days, but I'm currently in a very bad swing.

Maybe writing this out, my head will stop battling me. Maybe it won't. Maybe, I'll finally win this war, odds are I won't.

Now, before this gets any deeper, know that I am not considering self harm. Hell, that's what started this post.

But, let me explain how I got stuck in this slope, and why I joke about suicide.

You see, I knew this pit was coming. When you've felt with depression for a long time, you know its signs.

I try to make friends everywhere I go, with as many different people, from as many different backgrounds as I can.  When professionals give the advice of talk to someone, that's true. I do that, and make rude, tasteless jokes  (more on that to come)

Anyway, like I said, I try to make friends everywhere, that way, when I know I'm having an attack, I have different people to help based on what set my brain off.

For the fourth of July this year, one of my friends (I thought) wanted to have a get together. We planned everything out and decided since I have a more central location, me hosting would be the best idea. I skipped a vacation concert to hang with some of my best friends. It didn't really bother me, because I love these people.  Flash forward to the bbq, and co-host never showed, and worse yet, never let me know he wasn't going to show. Now, having something like this happen will throw me into the brink of collapse. I knew I would be sad, abandoned and angry, but I would get past it. However my brain took this time to start casing the neighborhood. As fortune would have it, the following two and a half weeks would be a plethora of little things that would enable my brain to claim the victory it had been desperately trying to achieve. As anybody who's depressed will tell you, it's usually the little things that snowball and complete the depression job. The final piece was after Chester Bennington died, I made a joke on Facebook, and of course was attacked for it. Now, remember when I said I make tasteless jokes to deal with my depression? I knew the joke was tasteless, but I made it anyway. My suicide jokes are my way of keeping my demons at bay. At taking power, over a powerless situation. Perhaps this time, my brain knew I would be attacked, and wanted me to see visual proof of how worthless I am.

Also, I know this post is all over the place. I'm just typing as my fingers permit, so bear with me.

I have ignored people all day, including my wife. Oh my wife. My sweet, sweet loving wife.

At the time of writing this, I have 47 notifications on Facebook, 38 unread text messages, 7 missed phone calls and 4 voice mails. I know the vast majority of this is her doing. Many of these are from people I do not talk to on a regular basis. She is my lighthouse, and without her I am lost. I'm sorry you have to put up with this bullshit from me baby. I've tried to get a handle on it, and I need you more than anything in this world.

I'm not one for trigger warnings, but I do have one. It's not for me however, it's for Sarah, so she knows when I'm battling. I will repeat "The End" by Blue October. This time there was no trigger. I'm so sorry I've failed you baby.

Depression hits everyone differently and there is no "cure". For some, prescriptions work. For me, they just turned my brain to mush. I was in a constant fog.

For some, working out works. This is part of my regiment,  but it's not enough sadly.

Football used to be my cure, but with age that is no longer an option.

The one thing that helps me is my wit. Thus, the need for me to make horrible jokes. To find horrible memes. To take the power back from my shitty ass brain that hates me. I know it's inappropriate, mean and wrong. The majority of my friends know that it's an attack on suicide, not the person. I NEED to take control, humor about a shitty situation is my way.

I will get past this. I have an amazing wife who is my world. I will not let this disease destroy the greatest love in the world. I have an incredible daughter, of whom I will shield any damage, including my own. I thought I had amazing friends, and had built an unbreakable support structure. Now I'm not so sure. But again, that's my brain trying to win this battle. And while it may have won the fight, it's not going to win the war.

After I post this, I expect my phone to blow up (it is a Samsung after all). I know the people that were there during my suicide attempts will reach out. I know when I get home my wife will crawl into my lab, hold me and cry. I know I'll receive friendly and not so friendly comments on this post.

Cast your stones at me. I can take it

If you are battling with depression, find your coping mechanism. If you need me, please reach out. I understand your battle more than you know.

Episode 200: Bat and Hammers Quintessential 90's and 00's movies

For our 200th episode we wanted to visit one of our favorite topics. Teenage ensemble movies from the 90's and 00's. With the help of a few podguests, we came up with our quintessential top ten list. The movies must fit into this criteria. 1. Have a teen or mostly teen cast. 2. Must be an ensemble piece. 3. Had to survive the 5 man & woman panel. So without any more delay, welcome to the list.

Editor's note. The list in not in order. There's not enough time in the world.4

1. 10 Things I Hate About You
From the very start of our debate, this movie was a unanimous choice to be included. This modern telling of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" features a cast of mostly no names that would go on to achieve stardom throughout Hollywood. With up and coming stars, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Heath Ledger, and a pretty killer soundtrack, this masterpiece hits on all levels.

If you meet someone and they do not like this movie, remove them from your life immediately.

2.American Pie.
The raunchy teenage movie had been relatively dormant for some time until American Pie came along. The plot of teenage boys trying to lose their virginity before graduation isn't a new one, but the way American Pie executed it made it feel that way. With lines that are still quoted to this day ("this one time, at band camp" "MILF") American Pie has found it's way to many "best of" lists from the 90's, and of course we had to have it on ours.

3. The Craft.
Take 4 angsty teenage girls, sprinkle in some goth and a killer soundtrack and you have the perfect recipe for success. The Craft is a wonderfully told story of High School from the perspective of 4 girls. The characters are relatable for males and females, and even if the ending is a bit campy, the movie takes the inclusion of witchcraft seriously.

4. Mean Girls
A fresh portrayal of a fish out of water, Mean Girls brought more heart than most teen comedies. Lindsay Lohan plays a foreign student getting her first taste of not only school life, but high school life. With a fantastic supporting cast (so fetch) Mean Girls adds depth to a genre that sometimes doesn't see much of it.

5. Scream
Like American Pie, Scream reinvigorated a genre that was nonexistent. Adding humor, and mystery to the standard teenager slash flick was just the right combination. Like most ensemble movies, Scream lists an absolutely incredible cast, and just enough twists and turns to keep audiences guessing as to who the killer is.

6. Empire Records
Bridging the gap between adolescence and adulthood is something everyone must learn, but few movies have given such a fantastic interpretation as Empire Records. Featuring a top notch cast, a soundtrack of Indie and Popular artists, and of course, Rex Manning Day, Empire Records illustrates how life, love, career and happiness change from our teenage years to our adult years.

7. Varsity Blues
Underage drinking, promiscuous sex and football. These things are the backbone of high school, and no other movie understood this like Varsity Blues. Featuring a story that showed what it's like to be the popular kid with parents that have unrealistic expectations of you and continue to live their lives through their children, Varsity Blues sets the standard for high school football movies, if not sports movies.

8. She's All That
Few movies have gotten the Ugly Duckling story (remember Rachel Leigh Cook was ugly because she wore overalls and had glasses) as right as She's All That. There was a string of movies in the 90's with Freddie Prinze Jr. (co-starring Matthew Lillard) with She's All That being placed at the top of the list. The school's most popular kid takes a bet from dude that races cars that he can turn any girl into prom queen. The plot is predictable as "inner beauty" for both characters shines, and they discover for themselves they are more than just their high school persona's.

9. Clueless
Another movie focusing on the popular kids in school, Clueless takes the viewer on a journey of self discovery for Cher and her ultra elite friends. Alicia Silverstone got her breakout role from this movie, and her portrayal of Cher is paramount to the heart of Clueless. Making the ultra elite vulnerable is difficult, but this stellar cast of characters makes it easy to care for them,

10. Bring it On
Why should you care about the perfect high school cheerleader? That's the question Bring it On asks the viewer. And while I was overruled on the inclusion of Bring it On, I cannot argue it's inclusion to this list. Focusing on the head cheerleader trying to help her squad win it's 6th straight championship, Bring it On is a tacky, cheesy, yet heartwarming story of friendship, competition and teamwork.

So there you have. Our top ten 90's and 00's ensemble teen movies. What do you think of our list? Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments below.

Remember, to be included in this list the movie must

- Be an ensemble piece focusing on teenagers
- Been released between 1990-2009

Episode 201: The Spidey Stark Internship Story

Hello and welcome to this week in geek.  It's episode 201!  You read that correctly, next week while I'm away we will be posting Episode 200 with our 90's and 00's teen ensemble round table.  This week however we have our Spoiler free and Spoiler filled review of Spiderman: Homecoming.  Due to my lack of planning I didn't finish this week's streaming review of Creed so we will be pushing this off till I get back from vacation.  We also have our answers from last week's podquestion of who is your favorite Transformer.

Because I'm  a poor planner, our streaming recommendation is still  Creed on HBOgo.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

Episode 199: Baby, We're on Board

Hello and welcome to this week in geek.  This week we get to review one of worst named movies of the summer, Baby Driver and we have our spoiler free review and a spoiler filled review at the end of our podcast where we tell you what we really thought.  Okay, the title of this week's show kind of gives it away, but we will tell you what we liked about it.  We also review this week's streaming review of Sully, talk over the SNES Classic and some free shit good shit.  Also we have your answers from last week's podquestion of what your favorite E3 reveal was.

This week's recommendation was
Sully on HBOgo.  Full disclosure, I didn't remember this incident so it took me all the way till the end for me to get that it was based upon a true story.  Besides that, we both agreed that this movie felt really short, but this was mainly due to lack of movement.  The movie takes almost entirely during the the investigation of the crash, with a few flash backs to the flight itself.  While we really do like Tom Hanks we can both agree that this isn't his best movie.  He does a fine job acting, it's just that the movie itself really isn't all that entertaining.  It was okay to watch the first time but we both would be hard pressed to recommend anyone else going out of their way to watch it.

For our next week's recommendation we're watching Creed on HBOgo.  While I've never seen any of the Rocky movies I am super excited to see this movie one.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.
