Episode 194: The Truth Is Out There... That Alien Covenant Isn't Good

Hello and welcome back! While we took a week off the news started to really stack up! We have a whole mess of Nerd News in addition to our theatrical review of Alien Covenant and our streaming review of Now You See Me 2. We also now are in the final count down to Phoenix Comic Con! Damn, I can’t tell you how excited we are! So many things to see and people to talk with. It’s one of my favorite times of the year! But for now let’s get onto the podcast as well as our Podquestion of what is your favorite Star Trek TV show theme?

This week's recommendation of  Now You See Me 2 was from Bat.  While we both adored the first movie, we were sadly disappointed with this second foray into NYSM's world.  Some of our biggest complaints were in the form of flat character development.  Normally in a sequal you would look to further evolve your characters that you set up in the first movie.  But this one seems to just keep the status quo and only really allows Lizzy Caplan's character to find some growth.  But that's probably because she's the only real new one to the team.  Also, we just couldn't get past the zany character of Woody Harrelson's "brother."  He just felt really phoned in and very distracting.  The movie isn't a total loss as you're still treated to some really fun spectacles in the form of their magic tricks.  But I would still argue that alone is not worth the price of admission.  If you loved the first one we both recommend you pretend like this one didn't exist and enjoy the first one again instead.  Bat and I both gave this one 2/5.

This week's recommendation of Split is all me baby!  Well, to be honest, we both have been craving to see this one and just couldn't wait till it came to streaming.  So instead we're doing the rare thing and renting this one instead.  Here's to hoping this one lives up to the hype!

Episode 193: The Guardians of Fleetwood Mac

Hello and welcome back! Guess what?  It's the (Bat and Hammer) official start to Summer Movie Season!  This week we bring you our Spoiler free and Spoiler filled review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 as well as our streaming review of the Legend of Tarzan.  We also have a few trailers to discuss before wrapping up with our Podquestion of what popular gaming series have you fallen out of love, yet want to fall back in love with?

This week's recommendation of Legend of Tarzan was my choice.  Right off of the bat Bat did not like this one and said he found it boring over all.  His only thing he really liked was the fact that Tarzan always kept his hands in an ape like knuckle... yup that was his only thing he liked about this.  I on the other hand had a pretty good time with this retelling of a later in his life Tarzan.  While far from perfect it was an entertaining tale.  The villain motivations were either too convoluted (Christoph Waltz's character) or too simple (Djimon Hounsou's character ).  While I wouldn't give it a second watch I would say it was fun if you have any love at all for the character.  Bat would tell you to avoid it at all costs.

This week's recommendation of  Now You See Me 2 comes from Bat.  We both liked the first one but are unsure how they're going to do with the parting of ways with Isla Fisher.  You can watch this one with us on HBOgo.

Episode 192: Inside Helmet Jokes

Hello and welcome back!  It's another illustrious "slow news week."  We stayed out of the theater again this week but instead watched out streaming review of Backcountry.  We also talk a little about Call of Duty WWII and a Unbreakable sequel.  We wrap everything up with some free shit good shit and our answers to last week's Podquestion of what actor did you feel was underused or wasted in a Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This week's fan recommendation, from Kristi, was the hiking horror movie Backcountry.  We went into this movie with no expectations and were relatively surprised.  Although this movie is not great, it was pretty decent.  We liked how it just jumped right into the story unlike, as Bat pointed out, The Forest.  I also really found the Bear scene to be particularly impacting... like wow, I felt uncomfortable. Our biggest gripes were the "stupid" mistakes that had to be made for the movie to happen that we felt cheapened the movie.  Bat also kind of wanted a subplot involving the Trailman.  Overall we both gave it a thumbs up and thought it was an entertaining watch.

This week's recommendation of Legend of Tarzan is my choice.  We missed this one in the theaters and we're about to find out if that was a good or bad thing.  Here's to hoping that we'll go ape for this one... nope, I'm not sorry for that one.  You can watch this one with us on HBOgo.
