Episode 142: Get to the Maggie

Welcome back to another episode of SzG.  Again no theatrical review this week and again we're kind of stuck with little to no news.  Except for the 'controversy' surrounding the casting of Finn Jones as the immortal Iron Fist, really kids this is just getting silly.  Otherwise we dive into some streaming reviews, my 2nd game review in Hammer's 12, some free shit good shit and our spoiler filled reaction to episode 3 of Making a Murderer.

This week's streaming suggestion from Bat was Maggie. Both Bat and myself are on the same page that we felt a bit miss lead by the trailer.  We expected a no holds bar protect"my slowly zombifiying daughter.  But instead we got a very dramatic and more down to earth movie about a father and daughter coming to terms with her inevitable demise.  Bat felt a little let down by these turn of events though he still gave it a 3/5.  While I loved this different take on a zombie infection and the focus particularly on the daughter and father characters, earning 4/5 from me.  Over all we both liked it and I would give it a high recommendation if you liked movies like The Road, though it's probably only worth a single watch.

Next weeks streaming suggestion of The Voices is brought to you be me.  Come watch as we see the murdering psychosis fueled gore comedy staring Ryan Reynolds and Anna Kendrick.  Check out the trailer below to see just how weird this one looks.  This is available on EpixHD.

Episode 141: Shooting the Breeze

Welcome back to another episode of SzG.  No theatrical review this week, we're kind of saving ourselves for BvS next month... crap, can you believe that's next month?  Soon the rest of the comic/geek movie flood will follow suit.  But until then we're stuck with, well with really not much in terms of interesting news.  So you're in store for one of our famous... shoot the shit podcasts.  Bat talks his experiences with Amazing Arizona Comic Con, I recount what I can remember from AZ Strong Beer Fest, we talk about what Deadpool's success means for future comic book movies, also we dive into the future and past of video games along with our streaming review of Project Almanac and Episode 2 spoiler review of Making a Murderer.

This week's fan streaming suggestion from TK was Project Almanac.  Over all Bat and I came out a little at ends with this movie.  I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would, not perfect by any means but it had some interesting concepts and garnered a 3/5 from me.  It's not really worth a repeat viewing but it was fun for a one off.  Bat on the other hand didn't enjoy it as much and gave it a 2/5.  He put it very succinctly by saying it was Butterfly Effect but not done as well."  He's spot on, this movie does a lot of the same things but not as well and is hampered by the "found footage" feel.  I think we both can agree that if you found the time travel aspect neat, then watch a better version of it and go see Butterfly Effect.

Next week's streaming review of Maggie was chosen by Bat.  We both loved the idea of this movie when we saw the initial trailer and concept but never made it out to the theater to see it.  Schwarzenegger protecting his daughter who is slowly turning into a zombie... sign me up.  This is one I'm all in for.  If you want to watch along you can find this on EpixHD and we believe HuluPlus.

Episode 140: SkullPoople

Welcome back to another episode of SzG.  God it feels like Summer movie season is already starting.  This week we get back into the theater to review Deadpool, which we were both excited but trepidatious about.  We discuss the one nerd news of note (at least to us) and we lay out a series of movie and streaming reviews including last weeks choice of The Theory of Everything.

I am so incredibly happy that we are back to choosing movies that we actually might like.  this weeks choice was The Theory of Everything.  The reason for this choice was two fold.  I have always been very interested in Stephen Hawking and I wanted to give Redmayne one more shot.  This movie fulfilled both of these asks in spades.  I now know more about an iconic mind of our time and I was treated to some honestly astounding acting.  Redmayne really put his all into this performance.  Something that could have easily gone south or been seen as inappropriately funny was done so tastefully and respectfully that you couldn't help but feel the weight of all of these changes.  We both really liked this movie and gave it  4 out of 5.  The only thing holding it back from a 5 for both of us is simply because we know this is a one time watch for us but it was well worth the time, give it a watch.

Next week we have a fan suggestion from TK, Project Almanac.  Beside the plane crash scandal that surrounded this movie I don't know much other than it looks to be sort of foundfootage time travel movie.  If you want to watch this one you can find it on Amazon Prime Video.

Episode 139: Fifty Shades of Nope

Welcome back to another episode of SzG.  Sorry for the missed show last week but I had to catch my fair share of death.  Can't have my co-host doing all of the dying on his lonesome.  But now that I'm in working order, of sorts, we're back and ready to talk about this weeks nerd news:  Elizabeth Banks cast in Power Rangers, Dangerous Golf announced, Star Wars Battle front DLC, possible Hasbro and Matel merger, more DeLoreans, Lego TFA,and Flash showing up on Supergirl.  We also bring you our streaming review of 50 Shades of Grey and our series review of True Detective season 2.

This weeks Streaming Punishment of 50 Shades of Grey was brought to you by Bat.  And I can tell you quite succinctly that there really isn't anything redeeming about this movie.  Its just plain boring.  There is no chemistry and honestly I could give two shits about the characters.  Even the 'shock value' is severely diminished as it felt like a bad Cinemax after hours movie with writing done by a part-time Lifetime intern.  Please do your self a favor and find something more productive to do with your time that waste it on this movie or it's possible sequels.

Alright, an armistice has been agreed upon and we will stop intentionally throwing the bad movies back and forth.  so for next weeks streaming review we are going to be watching The Theory of Everything.  We saw a horrible performance by Redmayne in Jupiter's Ascending but everyone is saying that he was magnificent in this movie.  We're looking forward to seeing if that's the case and hope you will join us on this adventure.
