Episode 133: An Old Hope

Hello everyone and thanks for coming back for another episode of Sprecken ze Geek.
This Episode marks the 4th week on our march onto The Force Awakens and our first (in a while anyways) foray into the original trilogy with our "streaming review" of Episode IV: A New Hope. This week we go through the announcements from Playstation Experience and our experiences at this years Fanfest. Funny enough another little company called Warner Bros also decided to drop another trailer for a little indy film called Batman V Superman, so we also discuss our thoughts on the trailer.  If you wanted to avoid possible spoiler talk about BvS skip from 38:34 to 52:47 and you'll skip right past it all.

It's been easily a couple of years since I've gone back and watched any of the original trilogy but after watching Episode IV: A New Hope I have to admit this one is a lot slower than I remember.  Not saying the movie is bad, but it is just paced slowly and there's a few logical errors that leave you scratching your head.  That said, this is the movie that quite literally started it all.  Bat made a good point that the similarities between Anakin and Luke are kind of crazy.  Both are very, very whiny which means it must be in the jeans.  Leia obviously takes after her mother.  With all it's good and bad (those 'updated' additions aren't so spiffy) we still enjoyed the movie and would give it a 3/5.

Next week we're continuing our journey into the original trilogy of Star Wars with Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.  I'm really excited to watch this one again simply because I remember loving it.  But as with the rest of the movies we've watched the it's been a couple of years since I've last seen it.  You know the drill, Trailer is down below if want to refresh you memory.

For the next 2 weeks (holy shit only 2 weeks left!) our streaming reviews are going to be taken up by the Star Wars movies but we still want you to send us your reviews of this weeks choice or even suggestions for future episodes streaming review on Hulu, Netflix or HBOgo.  We will happily bank these for after The Force Awakened has come out.

Episode 132: Pre Thoughts

Hello everyone and thanks for coming back for another episode of Sprecken ze Geek.
This Episode marks the 3rd week on our march onto The Force Awakens as well as our closing thoughts on the prequel trilogy with our "streaming review" of Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Also a little company called Marvel decided to drop a trailer for a little indy film called Cap 3: Civil War, so we also discuss our thoughts on the trailer.

Okay I have to start this review out with an admission, I liked this movie a lot more than I remembered.  As stated before in the podcast I had thought my perception of the movie was tainted by other life events going on and I was right.  Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith is easily the best of the Prequel trilogy.  At least by Bat, myself and the fanbase at large.  Now with that settled we can move on.  This movie still is not a great movie, but it's a good movie... with it's fair share of issues that hold it back.  The fights are honestly pretty good (especially Obi and Anikin) but the Yoda/Sidious fight left a bit to be desired and honestly ended very anti climatically. The "love" story as a whole still continues to be a blemish as well does the acting of some of the slew of good actors present.  I keep imagining it had something to do with Lucas not directing them properly.  For a pay off movie it did okay and we both would give it 3/5 stars.  But Bat posed a good question, would this movie have the same impact/detractions if you had seen the prequels before the original trilogy?

Next week we're continuing our journey by moving into the original trilogy of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.  I'm actually curious to see how this one holds up since it's been a couple of years since I've last seen it.  You know the drill, Trailer is down below if want to refresh you memory.

For the next 3 weeks (holy shit only 3 weeks left!) our streaming reviews are going to be taken up by the Star Wars movies but we still want you to send us your reviews of this weeks choice or even suggestions for future episodes streaming review on Hulu, Netflix or HBOgo.  We will happily bank these for after The Force Awakened has come out.

Episode 131: Awkward Creeper Stares the Movie

Hello all and welcome back to another episode of Sprecken ze Geek.
This Episode marks the 2nd week on our march onto The Force Awakens with our "streaming review" of Episode II: Attack of the Clones. We also bring you a spoiler free and spoilerfilled review of Mocking Jay Part 2 and discuss a more Star Wars goodness with our review of Battlefront and Disneyland's Season of the Force.

Episode II: Attack of the Clones.  Oh man does this movie ALSO didn't age so well.   Though both Bat and myself were surprised that the movie that we once considered the worst of the Prequel Trilogy was actually a bit better than we remembered.  Again the movie is not great or really good but it's far from the crap fest that we thought it was.  Yes Padame and Anikin's love story is still atrocious but as Bat points out, if you were to remove that from this movie you'd have a decent sci-fi flick.  This movie actually has a plot that makes more sense, still plenty of holes but the plot is there.  There is also a heck of a lot more action than Ep 1.  Over all this movie has a few more cool scenes and fun action but still felt a bit sloppy overall.

Next week we're continuing our march to Episode 7 by reviewing Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith.  Now if you haven't seen this one... hey it could still happen... or you want to refresh you memory check out the trailer below.

For the next 4 weeks our streaming reviews are going to be taken up by the Star Wars movies but we still want you to send us your reviews of this weeks choice or even suggestions for future episodes streaming review on Hulu, Netflix or HBOgo.  We will happily bank these for after The Force Awakened has come out.

Episode 130: Fuck You Stitcher

Hello all and welcome back to another episode of Sprecken ze Geek.
This Episode marks the first of our 6 week march to The Force Awakens and we kick it off with our "streaming review" of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.  We also discuss this weeks nerd news including: The return of Nintendo Directs, Cloud in Smash, Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow coming to Virtual Console, new Fire Emblem, Twilight Princess HD remake, Xbox One topping the charts for October and the list of the 104 backwards compatible 360 games.

We also want to take a moment for those who were hurt or lost their lives in Paris this past week. It was a terrible act of cowardice and we wish all the best to the families of the victims.  As Bat also mentioned, if you want to do more try taking a look at a few of these groups and offer your support.

This week we re watched the travesty that is Episode I: The Phantom Menace.  Oh man does this movie NOT age well.  Funny enough Bat and I are watching it two different ways.  Bat remastered Bluray and myself watching the first released DVDs.  But neither does this move any favors.  Really the only two things you are missing out if you don't watch this one are Darth Maul and Duel of Fates... that's about it.  We really didn't like this one and if we had to rate this one it would be 2/5 easily.  We also have a fun question to ask of you.  Can you explain the full plot of Episode I in one sentence?  We only ask because we couldn't do it.

Next week we're continuing our march to Episode 7 by reviewing Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.  Now if you haven't seen this one... hey it could still happen... or you want to refresh you memory check out the trailer below.

For the next 5 weeks our streaming reviews are going to be taken up by the Star Wars movies but we still want you to send us your reviews of this weeks choice or even suggestions for future episodes streaming review on Hulu, Netflix or HBOgo.  We will happily bank these for after The Force Unleashed has come out.

Episode 129: See You Next Tuesday

Hello all and welcome back to another episode of Sprecken ze Geek.   Since I went to the theater solo, this week we bring you my spoiler free theatrical reviews of both Specter and Sicario. We also review Circle, our last streaming movie for the month of horror and we continue our review of season 2 of True Detective with episode 5.  This weeks Nerd news includes: Overwatch coming to consoles, Target Games sale, Black Friday Soap Box, New Star Trek TV series and Warcraft movie trailer.

This month's last streaming suggestion for our 2nd annual month of Horror was Circle.  The trailer pretty much gives you exactly what to expect from the movie.  50-60 people are placed by aliens in a room and have to vote who dies next.  This is very much a character movie with pretty much zero horror.  But with that said it does some interesting things with the character interactions in this demented game show of a movie.  The worst part, and what really kills it for both of us, is that the movie just ends without a rhyme or reason.  There is nothing there to give any context of the possible bigger picture.  That lack of closure brought both of our scores down from 4/5's to 3/5's.  We have a hard time recommending this one even with the cool concept.

Next week we're starting our march to Episode 7 by starting to review the Star Wars movies 1-6.  First up is Episode I: The Phantom Menace.  Now if you haven't seen it... hey it could happen... or you want to refresh you memory check out the trailer below.

For the next 6 weeks our streaming reviews are going to be taken up by the Star Wars movies but we still want you to send us your reviews of this weeks choice or even suggestions for future episodes streaming review on Hulu, Netflix or HBOgo.  We will happily bank these for after The Force Unleashed has come out.

On a final note you all our listeners.  I wanted to mark a special occasion as yesterday was a special day.  1 year ago I almost lost one of my best friends and one of the greatest co-hosts.  Looking back on it I honestly can't imagine what this past year would have been there without you in our lives.  I'm grateful for every stupid fart joke and every thoughtful introspective discussion we have and look forward to many more  in the years to come.  This ones for you Bat, cheers!  I drink to your good health.  Life is for the living.

Episode 128: Wouldn't You Rather Not?

Hello all and welcome back to another episode of Sprecken ze Geek.  While it was a repetitively quite week in terms of news we still find our way to bs around, review this weeks streaming choice of Would You Rather and we continue our review of season 2 of True Detective with episode 4.

This weeks second to last streaming suggestion for our Month of Horror was Bat's suggestion of Would You Rather. I have to admit that I wasn't nearly as upset by this movie as I thought I would be.  It was fairly tame, except for the razor blade to the eye... that caused me to walk away from the screen for a bit.  But overall it was just an okay movie, not horrible but not great.  Bat enjoyed this one a little more than myself by giving it 3/5 stars while I gave it 2/5.

Next weeks streaming suggestion of Circle closes out our Month of Horror! This one's more of a suspense movie by the looks of it.  You can check out the trailer below.
