Episode 92: Empty Fili-ings

Welcome back dear listener!  Tis the season of slow news and our 2nd anniversary episode and you know what that means?  That's right, it's time for another Hobbit movie and a whole of lot bullshitery!  Really though it's kind of hard to believe we've already been at this for two years and it only seems right that our anniversary is heralded with the movie series that started it all. We want to just give a genuine and heartfelt thank you to everyone out there listening/reading.  We really appreciate all of your support and input, it makes us feel all fuzzy every time we get to meet or talk with you wonderfully geeky guys and gals.

Now with all of that merriment out of the way lets get to this weeks streaming review of Knights of Badassdom.  This movie is pure silly with a health dose of gore.  Seriously everyone dies in this damn movie.  Death aside, this was a wonderfully strange ride with a few notable actors and some pretty gruesome deaths.  If you had seen "Unicorn City," "Gamers: Dorkness Rising" or other LARP/Table Top RPG movies you kind of know what you are in for.  While this may not appeal to everyone both of us enjoyed it plenty enough to give it 3/5 on Netflix and would recommend it.

Our next and possibly last streaming review for this year is going to be In A World.  The movie centers around the daughter of a renowned movie announcer who is trying to make her mark in her fathers business.  Just say the movie title out loud in a dramatic way and you will know who her father is. Enjoy the trailer below and here's to hoping the movie is enjoyable.

If you want to join us on our third (and possibly final) December movie of the month you can find this movie on Netflix. You can send us your reviews or your suggestions for our next streaming review via Facebook, Twitter or email us at Batandhammer@gmail.com

This episode we take a look back over this years Streaming/Theatrical reviews, discuss our favorite games we played this year and talk about The Review getting pulled.

Episode 91: the SzG Star Wars Holiday Special

Welcome back dear listener!  This episode we are joined by returning guests TK and Mando as we again skip out on the theatrical releases, we are waiting till next weekend to see the final Hobbit movie.  Instead we review this weeks Streaming Review of "Snowpiercer." The rest of our show this week is a round table discussion on Star Wars and where we see it going as well as delve into the past a bit.

There has been a lot said about this movie, some say it is a life changing movie while others say it is a train wreck (yup, we love puns).  I can say pretty confidently that while neither of us were really blown away by the movie we both enjoyed it enough to give it 3 stars.  There is surprisingly a lot happening on this train with some social commentary about class systems, ecological changes and humanity in general.  Not all of it is really heavy handed but it isn't subtle either.  The movie has a really strange feel to it that I find hard to describe besides that at times it can go from being really comical with the main character that Tilda Swinton plays to the admissions of what Chris Evans character did to survive in the beginning.  I would say that the movie is worth the one watch but try and keep your expectations in check as there isn't some life changing message here and the ending really falls flat.

Next week we have Knights of Badassdom as our next streaming review to give us a bit of silly in our lives.

If you want to join us on our second December movie of the month you can find this movie on Netflix. You can send us your reviews or your suggestions for our next streaming review via Facebook, Twitter or email us at Batandhammer@gmail.com

Episode 90: Nostalgica!

Welcome back friends, we hope you all had a nerdy and happy Thanksgiving.  No new theatrical release this week so we will instead rush onto our new Streaming Review...
"Rush."  We both originally planned to see this one in theaters but time just got away from us and luckily it came back onto our radar thanks to Bat's Heterolifemate.

To start off, Ron Howard makes some pretty damn good movies.  And Rush is one of those movies.  The movie delivered on what the trailer proposed, a dramatic and well acted depiction of two race icons (who honestly I had never heard of before the movie).  Howard does a wonderful job of making us care for a sport and these drivers in a way I didn't think he could.  We both really enjoyed the movie and it really is gorgeously shot and well acted. If we were able to rate it on HBOgo we'd give this a solid 4 our of five.  If the trailer intrigues you at all I'd definitely recommend for you to watch it.

"Snowpiercer" is our next streaming review, care of our friend Tristan.  I don't know much about the movie besides the trailer and that Tristan called it "Cap on a train" so I''l leave you with the plot synopsis.
Set in a future where a failed climate-change experiment kills all life on the planet except for a   lucky few who boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe, where a class       system emerges.

If you want to join us on our first December movie of the month you can find this movie on Netflix. You can send us your reviews or your suggestions for our next streaming review via Facebook, Twitter or email us at Batandhammer@gmail.com

This teaser trailer is the big boy of the lot.  Everyone is talking about this one and over all we thought it was alright, still waiting on a proper trailer to really grab us.  But with Bat's favorite moment being the X-wings flying low and mine split between the Millennium Falcon and Broadsword lightsaber I think it's fair to say we're going to be seeing this one.  It is Star Wars afterall.  Also here's the George Lucas edit Bat talked about, it is rather entertaining.

Next up is Jurassic World.  Man this trailer has Dinosaurs and a park... I'm sold.  Really though, you don't have to convince me any further.

3rd up is the new Terminator, and well... it's a Terminator movie.  And we will both be seeing this one, though we kinda hope they get rid of Arnie soon as we can only take so many "I'll be back"s as well as "Come with me if you want to live"s.

4th up is the new Bond, Spectre.  This really is more of a title announcement and
casting reveal.  But it looks like they are using the newly reacquired rights to Spectre and I look forward to seeing where this final Craig movie goes.

Episode 89: We're Back, a Bat Story

Welcome back friends, we are back from a bit of an unexpected hiatus but back none the less.  Bat is on the mend which is a great thing to be thankful for as we round our way into the end of November.  It's a few weeks late but we bring you are Spoiler Free and Spoilerific review of Interstellar.  As well as tackle some topics that we have been siting on.

One of those topics was our last Horror movie suggestion from Kristi, "Grave Encounters." Holy shit this movie is evil, and quite good.  We both gave it a solid 3 stars and enjoyed it.  Bat even sent me a text a bit into the movie warning me to not watch it alone and low and behold what did I do?  I watched it alone, in the middle of the night but I did watch it with the lights on... which didn't really impede the creep factor.  This movie is quite a bit of a mind fuck and I would suggest it to people who are into movies like Silent Hill or Jacobs Ladder, something where you don't really know where the boundaries of reality lie.  If you are in for a spooky movie we both would give this one a recommendation.

Our next fan suggestion of "Rush" comes from Bat's Heterolifemate.  We had planned on seeing this Ron Howard movie in theaters due to a solid looking trailer and the cast attached to it.  Visually it looks pretty damn good and review wise it was generally well liked so I'm feeling pretty optimistic about this one.

Episode 88: Over Captainizing

Welcome back friends.  This week we continue with our fourth horror movie of October, "The Blair Witch Project."  This movie proves that nostalgia doesn't always stand the test of time.  This movie has not aged well and it is painfully apparent.  While this was my first time viewing Blair Witch this was one of Bat's favorites. Regardless we both arrived at the same conclusion, this movie just isn't good any more.  Bad camera work (shaky-er than shaky cam's should be), bad acting and supremely grainy visuals just drain any fun that would be had in this movie.  Really if you want your "found footage" movie fix we would suggest you look else where.

This weeks fifth and final horror movie "Grave Encounters" comes from fan Kristi.  We know absolutely nothing about the movie besides the trailer.  So give it a gander and maybe give it a watch so you can weigh in on next weeks podcast.

Episode 87: Prequilibrium

Welcome back friends.  This week we continue on with more nerdy news stories and a Theatrical movie review of "John Wick."  This movie won us over merely on the trailer and simple premise.  Did it live up to our expectations or fall flat on its face?  Listen in and find out.

We also tackle this weeks streaming review of "Quarantine 2: Terminal."  This idea to go for a disease movie came from Bat's wife and it was a good one.  Sadly the selection on Netflix was less than desirable, which is how we ended up with this movie.  To start, it is not a good movie by any stretch but then again we really didn't expect much from it in the first place.  The movie has no purpose to be watched as it is poorly acted, weak premised and just plain boring.  Combine all of that with the fact that are are plenty of better movies to be watched and you come to the same conclusion that we did.  Ignore this movie, even if you are a horror fan as it does no favors to the disease or zombie genre.  This one garnered 1 star from me and 2 stars from Bat.

Our next to last movie for the horror themed month of October is "The Blair Witch Project."  The movie that launched plenty of sequels/knock-off's was totally missed by me and Bat is more than happy to sit down and watch it again.  If you don't know about it check out the trailer below but be warned that it is shaky cam.

Episode 86: They're all gonna laugh at you

Welcome back friends.  This week we have a whole heaping mess of good nerdy news stories as well as our streaming review of "Carrie" starring Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore.

This remake was on both of our lists to see in theaters but we never got around to it.  Now I can't say that I was sad that we missed it in theaters, as I don't think it really is something you HAVE to see in theaters but It was a fun romp.  Having never seen the original, but knowing plenty about the movie, this was a lot of fun to watch.  The scenes of bulling are just as prevalent now as they were then.  And Carrie's final telekinetic break down is a hell of a show.  With solid acting by both Moretz and Moore (fucking a was she disturbing) and some nice visuals this one garnered a solid 3 stars from Bat and 4 stars from me.  Also if you were wanting to hear the Adam Sandler skit I was talking about (it's stupid but it makes me laugh) you can check it out here.  I think it fits perfectly with this movie, in a bad kind of way.

Trying to carrie on (I did that one on purpose) the horror movie theme this month we have our next streaming review of Quarantine 2: Terminal.  This movie comes care of Bat's wife suggesting a disease movie to go along with the horror theme.  Sadly this 2 star movie is the best we can come up with.  If you want to see what you are in for then check out the trailer below.

If you want to join us on our third horror movie of the month you can find this movie on Netflix. You can send us your reviews or your suggestions for our next streaming review via Facebook, Twitter or email us at Batandhammer@gmail.com

Episode 85: Escape from this movie while you still can

If you are joining us this week after watching the streaming review selection of "Escape From Tomorrow" I am so, so sorry.  Phew as doozies go this one definitely is a stinker.  But regardless of how bad this movie is we bring you our review of Escape from Tomorrow as well as the review of "Sharknado" which is also a bad movie, but in a good way.

Continuing with our Horror theme for this month we are going to be watching the new "Carrie" movie starring Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore.  This movies is a remake of the classic 1976 movie adaptation of Stephen Kings book, which I have neither seen or read.
This movie was on our list of movies to see in the theater and seemed to slip off our radar so we are excited to finally check it out.

Episode 84: Posh Shattner

Welcome back to your regularly scheduled week in geek with Bat and Hammer.  This week we lament the problems with the Epix app on PS3 as offer up the chance for my to redo my submission for this weeks streaming review since neither of us was able to watch "The Wolf of Wall Street."  So since it's the wonderful month of October we will be watching "Escape From Tomorrow."  I figure we should try and theme this months streaming suggestions in the horror genre, which Bat is all too excited about since that is all his wheel house.

If you want to join us on our first horror movie of the month you can find this gem on Netflix (warning it looks like a solid 2 1/2 stars). You can send us your reviews or your suggestions for our next streaming review via Facebook, Twitter or email us at Batandhammer@gmail.com

Trailer Review

Inside Out:
This is definitely more of a teaser rather than a trailer due to it heavily relying on your previous experiences with older Pixar movies but doesn't really provide us with much of a feel for the movie itself.  We aren't feeling too much love for the trailer but we are most likely going to be in the theater due to it being Pixar.

Jupiter Ascending:
This movie looks like it will be filling our Sci-Fi quota right along with Nolan's Intersteller.  The effects look good and the action looks fun, even if Tatum looks absolutely strange.  We are going to be in the theater for this one.

Taken 3:
I think I'm right with Bat on this one, if this movie went by any other name I would be pretty excited for it.  But due to being tied to the "Taken" franchise I'm feeling a little lukewarm.  Looks like more of the same but for some reason that doesn't get me excited for it.

The interview:
Hard to believe this movie really caused such a stir in the global political world but it really doesn't seem to stir much up in terms of comedy.  We are both trepidacious about this one.

John Wick:
Keanu + guns is always a good formula for Cinematic fun and this movie looks to carry on that tradition.  It really seems to be a good oll vengeance and shoot em up type flick and we both are excited to watch it.

Dumb and Dumber To:
This one looks ridiculous and we both know its going to be dumb but we are both going to be right there in the audience to wittiness all of its stupidity

Big Hero Six:
Now I said in the Podcast that I recommend against seeing the new trailer for this one because I feel like it gives away too much story.  But if you aren't already sold on this movie like we are then feel free to learn a bit more about it below.  I didn't post the embedded just in case people accidentally clicked on it.

Here are the answers to last weeks Podquestion of what is the scariest movie(s) you have seen.

Charles     The Exorcist- due to his Catholic upbringing
Fire in the Sky - Because... Fuck alien abductions that's why
Tristan       He does not remember the name but it involved sharp knives flying at people but                   he knows its definitely not Carrie
WW           Mimic - because Guillermo del Toro + Bugs = stuff of nightmares
Bat            Jaws - because it makes you forever afraid of whats in the water
Hammer    Flatliners - because really its a total mind fuck
Event Horizon- because its a total mind fuck...in space
